MACRINUS, DENARIUS, ROME MINT, LIBERALITAS, RIC 78
Macrinus
217-8 AD
Denarius
Rome mint
Obv: IMP C M OPEL SEV MACRINVS AVG
Laureate, draped and cuirassed bust right viewed from the front
Rev: LIBERALITAS AVG
Liberalitas standing left holding counting board and cornucopia
RIC 78, BMC –
Most of the examples of this coin that I have seen depict the laureate, draped and cuirassed bust viewed from the back, not the front as on this coin. RIC does not differentiate whether the bust is viewed from the front or rear for this reign.
CONSTANTIUS II, SOLIDUS FOUREE, ANTIOCH MINT, ROMA AND CONSTANTINOPOLIS WITH SHIELD, cf RIC 88
Constantius II
337-361 AD
Solidus
Antioch mint
347-355 AD
Obv: FL IVL CONSTANTIVS PERP AVG
Facing helmeted bust, holding spear and shield with equestrian shield
Rev: GLORIA REIPVBLICAE
Roma on left, enthroned facing, holding spear; Constantinopolis on right, enthroned left, foot on prow, holding sceptre; both hold shield inscribed VOT XX MVLT XXX
cf RIC VIII Antioch 88
An interesting contemporary imitation of a solidus of Constantius II. The gold plating is broken in parts exposing the base core. The closest official type is RIC 88, however, the die engraver of this imitative issue has not included a star after the SMANI mintmark in the exergue on the reverse.
POSTUMUS, ANTONINIANUS, MINT 1 (TRIER), MARS, AGK 42
Postumus
260-269 AD
Antoninianus
Mint 1 (Trier)
IMP C POSTVMVS PF AVG
Radiate, draped and cuirassed bust right
MARS VICTOR
Mars standing left leaning on shield and holding spear
Mint 1 (Trier), Issue 4
AGK 42, Elmer 389, Cunetio 2422 (2 ex)
A very rare reverse type from the 4th series, c.266-7. Only two examples in the massive Cunetio (Wiltshire, UK) hoard. Beautiful reverse detail with the hand grip on the back of the shield of Mars visible.
